Tutorial #2 - Searching and Sorting
Music Label 2008 offers a variety of ways
when it comes to searching, sorting and
filtering. We feel that one of the most
important tasks of our program is to enable you
to locate and display the music in an easy, yet
powerful way. The more you use Music Label , the
more you will discover about the powerful
features of the program.
Fast and Easy Sorting
The
easiest (and fastest) way to sort in Music
Label is to click the header of a column and
Music Label will sort the view by that field
instantaneously. Clicking the same column header
a second time, will reverse the sort to
descending sort order.
Advanced Sorting
If you want more control over sorting; you
need to click Advanced Sort in the toolbar. It
enables you to specify five levels of sorting.
Fast and Easy Searching
The easiest way of searching in Music Label
is by using Instant Search (that can be found in
the header of the view). It will search the most
commonly used fields in your database for a text
that you specify.
Expert Tip: You can specify the fields that
Instant Search use by clicking the '...'-button
in the Instant Search box.
Advanced Searching
The
Advanced Search enables you create a more
refined search to narrow down your search result
as much as possible. You can choose exactly what
field to search, how to search it and do this in
three levels.
If you choose 'contains' as operator you can
type e.g. 'a', and all items that contains 'a'
anywhere in the chosen field will be included in
the search result. If you want to be even more
precise you can use the 'like' operator. You can
then type 'a*' and everything that begins with
an 'a' will be displayed.
Using predefined
Searches
The
Find All sub-menu contains a number of
predefined searches, such as 'Items from same
Artist'. Choosing this will automatically search
for all entries/tracks that you have from the
currently selected artist. Another way of
predefined searching is choosing an item in the
treeview and the view will be filtered
accordingly.
Fast Filters and the
Filter Builder
Columns
that have a drop-down button in the header can
quickly be filtered by simply clicking that
button and choosing what value to filter by.
Doing so will automatically show the Filter
Builder at the bottom of the view (it can also
be shown by choosing it from the View-menu).
Closing the Filter Builder by clicking the red
close-button, will clear all filters.
If you click the Customize-button in the Filter
Builder, you can build advanced Filters. You can
even save them to a file for later use, or share
them with a friend. The Filter Builder enables
you to build more advanced filters than ever
before possible in Music Label.
Combining
Searches with the Filter Builder
You can combine the searches with the Filter
Builder since the Filter Builder builds its
result on the items made available in the
search. This enables you to search within a
search which is a really powerful feature.
